Staten Island Ferry

HVAC | Staten Island Ferry

LeBlanc & Associates is proud to supply the climate control systems for the passenger, crew, and machinery spaces of the new Staten Island Ferry. Eastern Shipbuilding Group will construct the vessel for the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT).

Increasing Ferry Ridership in NYC

The 5.2-mile route from Staten Island to Manhattan operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It serves over 22 million passengers annually. Moreover, ferry ridership is expected to rise as recreational activity on Staten Island increases and commuter traffic continues to grow. To meet this growing demand, the new Ollis Class Ferry will serve the route. In addition, the design incorporates the latest regulatory and environmental standards to ensure compliance and sustainability.

Maximizing Heat Recovery Performance

LeBlanc & Associates will deliver a full range of systems, including machinery ventilation, heating, HVAC for passenger and crew spaces, a tempered water system, and deck de-icing. To enhance efficiency, the team will integrate an engine waste heat recovery system to support the vessel’s heating load. Importantly, we aim to optimize heat recovery by carefully coordinating the system with the tempered water loop, while also minimizing weight and equipment costs. Additionally, VFDs installed in the passenger space air handlers will automatically adjust heating output and fresh air intake based on passenger load. As a result, the ferry will achieve better energy savings and more responsive climate control.
